This island nation located in the tropical Pacific Ocean is filled with coral reefs and is bustling with exotic wildlife. There are up to 32 atolls here each displaying its own peculiar nature. The name Kiribati is a derivative of the Gilbert's, by which the islands were originally called. The Oceanic language is locally spoken, but a while after some migrants settled down here. English is also spoken, but not as widely as the Oceanic language.
Kiribati prides itself on its fish and copra. Here are five attraction that tourists should consider seeing during their visit to Kiribati.
- Abaiang, literally meaning North Island, is a place that is favored by most tourists and thus is the most popular island amongst all the Kiribati islands. Abaiang is strangely the most remote of the Kiribati islands even though it is well linked to the other islands. It thus offers an unusual experience of calm reclusiveness. Women busy themselves weaving salting clams and this is a common sight here much enjoyed by some visitors.
- Abemama is an island where the Royal family is based and it can be accessed either by boat or plane from Tarawa. The island has the easiest route to the reefs nearby, and so is the most popular of them all. The island also derives its popularity from the 1889 visit by Robert Louis Stevenson. This is the only island which is a Crown colony, after being under British rule. There is a rare specie of barking frog that can be found in the sandy beaches around here.
- At Butaritari, one of the islands in the outer region of Kiribati, there is a variety of sea activities going on. Coconuts, breadfruit, and other fruit bearing trees can be found aplenty here. Sea life is also very rich and diverse. Tourists enjoy life at the beaches here which offers clear water for swimming. This island also has some World War II related history.
- Bird watching is a common pastime and is very relaxing. There are very rare and exotic birds types found here, which are most favorably watched early in the morning. Petrels, Shearwater, terns and many more birds are examples of birds which flock around the Island. There are exclusive bird watching tours arranged for interested bird lovers.
- Fanning Island, also known as Taubuaran, is where most tourists deplane, because it a cruise destination. Tours are also arranged for water lovers interested in snorkeling and sightseeing.
